A Nanny is an individual who cares for a child in the families own home. Nannies can work independently or through a Nanny Recruitment Agency.
Most Nanny Agencies require that Nannies hold a minimum qualification such as a Childcare Certificate, Nanny Certificate, although some nannies will not hold any formal qualification. Applicants are thoroughly police checked and will be required to hold a current First Aid Certificate.
Pay rates for Nannies vary greatly depending on whether he or she is qualified, what the job entails and whether they are living with the family or not. Nanny rates also differ from region to region and may be more expensive in the main cities. Families can expect to pay anywhere between $12 and $25 per hour. Nannies are also reimbursed for petrol and other expenses incurred while caring for the children. Live-in Nannies are often on a set wage, taking into account the provision of board, meals and the use of a vehicle.

It is up to the nanny and the family to decide and agree on what the Nanny’s role is, but generally her tasks are related to the care of the children. Depending on the hours the Nanny works and whether she lives with the family or not, her responsibilities will include getting the child ready for the day, school drop-offs,  running simple errands, attending play groups, preparing the child’s meal, helping with homework and carrying out end of day routines such as bathing and bed time. The Nanny may also be expected to carry out child-related domestic tasks such as laundry and cleaning the child’s bedroom.
